From living in a tent to securing accommodation in less than 4 hours

The Good Shepherd’s Breakfast Club offers people who have been rough sleeping the night before the chance to have a cooked breakfast, a hot shower, access to clean clothing and advice and guidance to help them back into accommodation.

Working with partners across the city, the project has seen plenty of success since it began nine months ago.

Key Worker Paul Burns highlights one particular case, where a man who was rough sleeping secured accommodation in less than 4 hours.

“We had a report that there was a man sleeping in a tent along the Cannock Road.

“I went along with P3 to see this man. When we got there, I could see he was mentally unwell. I knew the man from previous encounters so I encouraged him to come to the Breakfast Club, which he agreed to.

“So he came to the Good Shepherd for a hot shower and breakfast, and to have a chat about accommodation.

“We discovered he hadn’t claimed his benefit, so we logged a claim for universal credit for him.

“Then he said that he wanted to go on script for heroin. So we rang Recovery Near You who got an appointment for him that day to enrol into drug services.

“We rang P3 to say his benefits were now up and running and by 12pm they’d rang us back to say his accommodation in one of their hostels was secured.

“In less than 4 hours he’d gone from living in a tent to securing accommodation.”

With thanks to P3 and Recovery Near You and all our other partner organisations we secured these amazing results and the life-changing potential that it brings.
